Oiseaux d'une plume

Being part of a community enriches our lives–we’re able to connect with other like-minded people, learn from each other, and grow with each other. It’s one of the reasons that the phrase “birds of a feather flock together” often crosses my mind; we’re like magnets and seem to find each other even in random places (recently I told you about my trip to the City Museum in Saint Louis; I didn’t go into the story of how I found a kindred spirit who literally landed at my feet at the bottom of a slide–that’s for another day).

And while the majority of our artistmagazine newsletters are about how to improve your own art through tips and advice from contemporary professional artists, today I’d like for you to take a moment and consider your artist friends. The holiday season is just on the horizon, and with gift-giving in mind, the North Light Shop has a new feature: gifts” for artists.> It includes items that have been handpicked by our team of editors and includes books, DVDs, art supplies, magazine subscriptions, and even gift certificates in amounts starting as low as $25.

oil portrait painting by Juliette Aristides

Blu (oil, 34×24) by Juliette Aristides, featured in The Artist’s Magazine (March 2004)

Classical” painting atelier: a contemporary guide to traditional studio practice> by Juliette Aristides is included in this special section. This beautiful hardcover book features art theory and instruction, as well as 76 pages of master artworks for study. “Beginning artists today have been told that skill itself inhibits self-expression,” says Juliette. “On the contrary, I believe that learning the artist’s craft enables you to express your own vision. Traditional skills are the foundation that you, the artist, work from. It’s craftsmanship, not the lack of it, that is the basis of self-expression. Conversely, being creative without knowledge of craft is like trying to decorate a structurally unsound building.”

pastel still life painting by Daniel E Greene

Fenton, Gourds & Ballet Slippers (pastel, 24×30) by Daniel E. Greene, featured in Pastel Journal (August 2009) and The Artist’s Magazine (June 2010)

Another great gift for aspiring artists is this” daniel e. greene video on portrait painting with oil.> I was fortunate enough to have seen one of his still life paintings up close and personal when it was included in “Blossom II–Art of Flowers,” a traveling exhibition that came through Cincinnati, and it’s a moment that I’ll not soon forget. This is indicative of the artworks by our featured artists, and of what a beautiful thing it is to share. Browse” the rest of our gift guide here> and share your love of art education with another “bird of a feather.”

Hoping you spread your wings,
